DIY Trolling Spoon Storage
So you Steelhead or Walleye fish and have a bunch of trolling spoons and no great way to store them… You could use the tube system, allowing you to quickly see which one is which and keeping them from dinging each other up. You could also use a vertical storage box which would keep them all separate. Both of these are bulky designs and the second approach doesn’t even let you view them quickly and easily… Fishing a choppy Lake Erie, during the Fall Brawl and sub 40 degree temps is not an easy task. Toss in late nights, little light, numb fingers and you quickly realize how important being organized is.
The name of the game in fishing is and always will be EFFICIENCY. How much of the time you’re on the water do you have a bait in the water, fishing the most effective way(s) possible. The biggest part of fishing effective patterns is to burn through colors, sizes, and presentations until you find what works. This Spoon box was a game changer for me. It has allowed me to quickly view what spoons are in the box before I ever open it, while keeping them neatly separated and easily accessible! The ability to cut down on bulk, without losing the ability of seeing the spoons or keeping them from banging against each other is invaluable to me. Fishing is fun, but fishing can be tough at times and there’s no need to make it any harder on yourself with shotty, cluttered, unorganized storage solutions.
This DIY project is KISS 101. Item one, a deep 3+ inch art bin which you can procure from many art and crafts stores or worst case online. Second item is a board of sheet insulation. Yep, that’s it… Simply trace out the boxes shape onto the insulation board (by pushing the opened box down onto it) and then cut out the piece you need. Slide the perfect sized foam block into you new state of the art spoon box and cut some lines how you would like the baits to be stored and you’re done. The video below contains my thoughts on the box as well as a walkthrough of how I use it. Let me know what you think in the comment section!
